Classified Ads

Word count. The cost of a classfied ad is determined by word count. Abbreviations may be used. For example, "7-year-old" would count as three words, but "7-y/o" would count as one. "Hunter/jumper" would count as two, but "H/J" would count as one. A phone number with area code counts as one, but a website or an email address must be counted as two words. We include the state designation (e.g. MN) at the end of each classified at no extra charge. For prices, see Ad Rates and Sizes.

If your classified as has over 40 words, a Circle Ad or a "Square Circle" might be a better value. If it is over 50 words, you might want to move up to a Display Ad (1/8 page or larger), which comes with a border and layout options. Circle Ads

This is a classified ad run in a circle that is 2 3/8" in diameter. The circle is text-only and can usually hold about 40-50 words, depending on word length, line breaks, and how small you want the type to be. Circle Ads can grab attention because they stand out from other ads. If you have too much text for a circle, we can make the ad a 2 3/8" square for the same price, which holds more text; if we mention a "Square Circle," that's what we're talking about. If you have more than 50 or so words, your ad might look better as a Display Ad (maybe 1/8 page or 1/6 page). Compare costs here.

Photo Square

A Photo Square is 2 3/8" across and has text and usually one photo. A Photo Square usually doesn't hold more than 30-40 words, but it depends on the photo and on how small you want the type to be. The above ad has 36 words. If you want the photo larger, the text needs to take up less space, and vice versa. We don't recommend very small type if you want anyone over the age of 30 to be able to read your ad! If you have more than one photo, or more than 40 words, consider a 1/8-page or larger Display Ad.

Display Ads

Display Ads are ads between 1/8-page and full-page in size, usually have a border, and may or may not have photos or other graphics.

Space Reservations. Display Ads have a deadline for reserving space, as well as a materials deadline when we need your text and photos. For all deadlines, click here.

The Business Box

The Business Box is a boxed text ad that runs for the year (four issues). You may have up to five lines of text, which is centered in a box. The Business Box ads run with the classified ads, but have priority placement under the appropriate heading. You may run a Business Box ad for one issue at a higher proportional cost.

Please submit Business Box ads by email, then phone 608-232-2922 with credit card payment or mail a check (we do not recommend sending credit card numbers by email). Please indicate line breaks and which text should be emphasized with bold type. Business Box ads may also be mailed, faxed, or phoned in.
